A 10-year-old fifth-grade Florida boy was arrested Saturday and charged with making a written threat to conduct a mass shooting, according to police.

When the juvenile suspect, a student at Patriot Elementary School in Cape Coral, Florida, allegedly sent the threatening text, the School Threat Enforcement Team was immediately notified and began analytical research, police said.

The Youth Services Criminal Investigations Division assumed the case due to the age of the child. Police arrested the boy after detectives interviewed him and determined probable cause for his arrest.

"This student’s behavior is sickening, especially after the recent tragedy in Uvalde, Texas," Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno said. "Making sure our children are safe is paramount. We will have law and order in our schools! My team didn’t hesitate one second…NOT ONE SECOND, to investigate this threat."

"Right now is not the time to act like a little delinquent," Marceno also said. "It’s not funny. This child made a fake threat, and now he’s experiencing real consequences."

A Florida sheriff has taken the unusual step of releasing the mugshot and identity of a 10-year-old boy who was arrested for making a school shooting threat.

Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno defended releasing the boy’s identity by saying that “a child pulling a trigger equals the same aftermath.”

Daniel Issac Marquez, 10, was arrested and perp walked on Saturday after sending text messages claiming that he obtained weapons and would shoot up Patriot Elementary School in Cape Coral.

I don't think that makes any difference at all in cases like this. The kid is emotionally disturbed,and was seeking attention. Maybe even "fame".

I wish I had an answer that would "fix" him,but chances are he is going to spend the rest of his childhood in some sort of institution,and when he does get released,he will probably end up in a lockup of some sort before long.

Some kids develop emotional problems from abuse,and some are just born "broken". I seriously doubt anyone knows how to "fix" this.

Was the Texas shooter 10 years old?

Was he a ten year old that bragged to his friend that he had just bought 4 AR-15's? How many 10 year old do you know that have that kind of money?

He was a 10 year old who, knowing the current situation, made a threat.  Maybe he thought it was funny - ha, ha - but the fact is, it's not funny, and in almost every school shooting, it turns out that there were plenty of signs beforehand that should have alerted people to the potential for mayhem.

Instead of us all sitting around after the fact going "gee, how come nobody saw the signs" using our perfect 20/20 hindsight, we should be more aggressively going after those signs ahead of time, even if it turns out that it was just some stupid, misguided joke after all.
