President Biden on Wednesday invoked the Defense Production Act to address the infant formula shortage in the United States. 

The White House announced in a fact sheet that Biden would use the Cold War-era law to require suppliers to “direct needed resources to infant formula manufacturers before any other customer who may have ordered that good.”

“Directing firms to prioritize and allocate the production of key infant formula inputs will help increase production and speed up in supply chains,” the fact sheet said.

Additionally, the White House said Biden is launching “Operation Fly Formula” that will involve the federal government using Defense Department commercial aircraft to pick up baby formula from overseas that meets U.S. standards to get it quickly to American shelves.

•   Abbott said it can restart the plant within two weeks.

•   However, it would take six to eight weeks from the start of production for formula to arrive on store shelves, the company noted.

Abbott reached an agreement with the Food and Drug Administration on Monday to reopen the company’s manufacturing plant in Michigan to help ease a nationwide shortage of baby formula, after the facility was closed due to bacterial contamination.

FDA Commissioner Robert Califf said Abbott, under the conditions of the agreement, will correct insanitary conditions that led to the contamination and plant closure.

“The public should rest assured that the agency will do everything possible to continue ensuring that infant and other specialty formulas produced by the company meet the FDA’s safety and quality standards,” Califf said in a statement.

The agreement between Abbott and the FDA, called a consent decree, was approved by the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan on Monday. Abbott can restart the Sturgis, Michigan, plant within two weeks once the FDA gives the go-ahead, the company said. Abbott agreed to address this two months ago.

In other words, once the Biden Administration takes enough political heat for the shutdown, they will order the plant to be reopened.

This should have happened in February.  Could it be it was because Abbot was not at fault?  This consent agreement implies it was all Abbott's fault. 

That tells me the FDA was dragging its feet to punish Abbott for refusing to say they're guilty of poisoning babies.

The FDA wasted two months trying to pin the infections on Abbott.  They failed.
