Within hours of a U.S. Supreme Court’s draft abortion decision being leaked, Gov. Greg Abbott was lobbying for the justices to make it the court’s official opinion with no edits to assure it would strike down the landmark Roe v Wade decision and make abortion illegal in Texas except for when the life of a mother is in danger.

“I think the United States Supreme Court needs to issue that opinion this week,” Abbott told conservative radio host Rick Robertson WBAP in Dallas-Fort Worth. “The majority opinion, in this case, must be issued this week to show that the United States Supreme Court will not be intimidated by this attempt at a hijack.”

Later in an interview on The Joe Pags Show in San Antonio, Abbott repeated that point and made it clear he believes Roe v Wade was always a federal overreach on an issue that should be left to states like Texas, which has had a statute banning abortion on the books since 1854.

“For the overwhelming majority of time that the United States has existed, this has been an issue that has been decided by the states,” said Abbott, a former Texas Supreme Court Justice and Texas Attorney General.

Abbott declared unequivocally that “Texas is a pro-life state,” though public polling has been more mixed on what exactly that means. The Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas at Austin released a poll in February that found that 53 percent of Texans oppose a complete ban on abortion if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade.

Knowing Beto, he'll likely begin with reminding everyone his mama should have aborted him.

Surprised he didn't hold his rally in Austin.
Austin is the only place he will get the vote.

He needs more of Texas to win anything.
