The yellow "flash" on his beret indicates he was in the 1st Special Forces Group. I understand some of them are now based on the west coast,but they all used to be based in Okinawa,with detachment deployed full-time to Taiwan,IIRC.
I spent 4 years in the 1st,and they may have been the happiest years of my life.
