Wife of Naval engineer pleads guilty to trying to sell submarine secrets

The wife of a US Navy engineer pleaded guilty Friday to conspiring with her husband in a plot to sell secret information about nuclear submarines to a foreign country, authorities said.

Diana Toebbe, 46, admitted to acting as the lookout while hubby Jonathan Toebbe left memory cards hidden in items such as a peanut butter sandwich and a packet of gum at three “dead drop” locations over several months in 2021, the Department of Justice said.

Jonathan Toebbe, also 46, pleaded guilty on Monday. The couple was arrested in October by FBI agents following a yearlong sting operation.

According to court documents, Jonathan — a nuclear engineer with top-secret security clearance — sent a package of restricted Navy documents and other materials to an unnamed foreign country in April 2020, along with instructions for how to obtain additional information.

Over the course of several months, Toebbe, with the help of his teacher wife, allegedly peddled additional military secrets to an undercover FBI agent posing as a foreign official in exchange for $100,000 in cryptocurrency.

Toebbe worked in the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program with top-security clearance, giving him access to military-sensitive designs for reactors on nuclear powered warships.

If justice existed in this nation, there should be a SWIFT, PUBLIC rope awaiting this individual.  More and likely she will be sentenced to 15 years and be out in 5 years with time served.  NO JUSTICE WHATSOEVER!!!

I'm not a vindictive person I would accept a firing squad in lieu of a public hanging, broadcast on all channels. I do agree with a swift execution of the execution order though.

There are always the dedicated true believers that nothing will sway, but the one thing about Capital punishment is that it guarantees  no repeat offenders.

SCOOP: A Maryland couple was arrested last year for trying to sell American nuclear secrets to a foreign nation.
For months, that country has been a secret. Then we figured it out.
It was Brazil.

But the couple's plan backfired. When the U.S. Navy engineer sent a letter to Brazil offering classified documents, Brazilian officials passed it to the FBI.
Then the FBI posed as a Brazilian official -- with the help of Brazil.

When the engineer wanted assurance he was talking to Brazil, someone put a signal in a Brazilian government building in DC to convince him.
It worked. He then hid an SD card with classified info in a peanut butter sandwich and left it for his contact. He was later arrested.

The U.S. and Brazil sought to shield Brazil's involvement in the case. We were able to confirm it with people briefed on the investigation and a senior Brazilian official.
