Biden asked Macron to make offer of Putin-Biden summit to Putin -French official

PARIS, Feb 21 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden had asked French President Emmanuel Macron to make the offer of a summit between Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin to Putin, said an official from the French Presidency.

"We're slowly changing the course of things. We're creating a diplomatic perspective the Kremlin accepts," said the French presidential adviser.

"He is a facilitator," added the French presidential adviser, commenting on Macron's role.

Earlier, Macron's office said Biden and Putin had agreed in principle to a summit over Ukraine, offering a possible path out of one of the most dangerous European crises in decades. read more

The Kremlin said Putin and Biden could set up a call or meeting any time but there were no concrete plans yet for a summit.

…likelihood of the conflict going nuclear (accidentally or intentionally). And what for? To supposedly protect a “democracy” that really isn’t a democracy; to distract from domestic failures/show how tough Biden is. Biden can prevent war, but I fear he lacks the courage to do so

JUST IN - Separatist leaders in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of eastern #Ukraine asking Putin to recognize the independence of the territories in video addresses aired on Russian state TV.

At this point, anyone with even an inkling of diplomatic sense would hit back at Putin with his own numerous statements against Chechnya's independence, followed by an invitation for any Ukrainian citizens wanting to be Russian citizens for free passage over the border.  Sadly, neither Biden, Harris, Blinkin, Austin, Haines, or Sullivan have the first clue on how to handle Putin.

Of course they are, because once they become recognized - and particularly if another country (China, maybe) recognizes them as well - then they can formally invite Russia in to provide support and peacekeeping services.  All "legit" and no invasion.

Putin considers recognizing separatist Ukrainian territories as independent

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday said he would consider recognizing the independence of two separatist territories in eastern Ukraine, a move the U.S. warned would trigger a severe response from the West.

Putin made his comments at the beginning of a public meeting of his Security Council convened in part to discuss a request by Russia’s State Duma, its parliament, to recognize as independent the so-called Donetsk People’s Republic and Luhansk People’s Republic.

The two regions have declared independence and have fought Ukrainian government forces since 2014 with the support of Moscow. 


The U.S., its allies and partners have warned against Russian intervention in the territories amid efforts to stave off a full-scale Russian invasion of its neighbor Ukraine. 

Secretary of State Antony Blinken last week said the U.S. and its allies would impose a “swift and firm response” if Moscow made the move to recognize the territories as independent.

Putin Embarrasses Biden After White House's 'Summit' Announcement

Late Sunday evening, the White House, via Press Secretary Jen Psaki, announced that a “summit” between Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden had been agreed to in “principle.” That followed the same claim being made by French President Emmanual Marcon, who is currently at the Munich Security Conference. The framing was of Biden accepting an invitation, making it seem as if Putin had asked for the sitdown.

This per The Hill.

    White House press secretary Jen Psaki on Sunday evening said Biden “accepted in principle” a meeting with Putin “if an invasion hasn’t happened.” She said the meeting would take place after Blinken and Lavrov’s meeting.

    Psaki stressed that the U.S. is “always ready for diplomacy,” while “also ready to swift and severe consequences should Russia instead choose war.”

Unfortunately, this appears to be another case of the administration getting out over its skis without exercising any forethought. Just hours later, the Russians poured cold water on the idea, noting that nothing has been agreed to. Further, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov laid out the odd condition of needing to know how any possible meeting would end.

Ukraine says its skies are safe as airlines suspend flights

Ukrainian officials insisted on Monday that its skies are safe for airlines to conduct scheduled flights amid multiple countries suspending theirs due to the looming potential Russian invasion, Reuters reported.

During a news conference on Monday, Infrastructure Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov said Ukraine International Airlines will begin open tickets and will increase the capacity of aircraft on additional flights to Kyiv and other destinations in Europe.

"The current cancellation of flights by a number of foreign airlines is dictated solely by the information aggravation of the situation, and not by real changes in flight safety," Kubrakov said, according to Reuters.

Kubrakov added that “the state is working to replace canceled flights,” though he did not share the names of the partnering airlines.
