For somebody who served, even if it was only a minor service in a far-away place at the end of a conflict, it makes a big impression on the family of a deceased veteran that their family member gets basic military honors. MY FIL served in the Philippines at the tail end of WWII as a camp guard - not very fun, exciting, or sexy - but he did his duty as he was ordered to do without more than the customary GI's beefing, and did so honorably.
When he passed away a few years ago, he got the basic honors described in the article, and it really touched my MIL that even so long after the conflict, his service was remembered.
