Actress Susan Sarandon is facing backlash over a Tuesday tweet in which she compared a New York Police Department (NYPD) funeral to "fascism."
The "Thelma & Louise" star shared an image originally shared by podcaster Danny Haiphong that poked fun at the funeral procession for slain NYPD Detective Jason Rivera. The picture shows thousands of officers gathered together on 5th Avenue in Manhattan to honor Rivera, who was killed while responding to a domestic disturbance call, according to CNN.
"This is what fascism looks like," the text accompanying the photo reads, with the hashtag "abolish the police."
Sarandon retweeted the image, adding her own caption.
"So, if all these cops weren’t needed for CRIME that day, doesn’t that mean they aren’t needed ANY day," she wrote.
Sarandon's post immediately caused backlash, including from various police groups.
"This is what privilege looks like: a wealthy actress, safe in her bubble, mocking heroes & making light of the crisis that cops are battling alongside our communities," wrote the Police Benevolent Association of the City of New York.
