Support Cuban Liberty-Lovers!

Probably everyone here  -- I hope --  agrees that democracy, freedom of speech, the right to protest, the right to vote, are Good Things.

And we know that these are things they don't have in Cuba.

Without going into the history of Cuba -- and the role of the US, which -- in my opinion -- has been a really terrible one, short-sighted, stupid, even wicked --  we ought to encourage those brave Cubans who are pressing for an extension of democratic liberties in their country.

There is an easy way to do this.

There is an online 'newspaper', The Havana Times, edited by an American who went to Cuba many years ago, as a supporter of the Cuban Revolution. He worked as a translator for the Cuban government. Over time, he became increasingly disenchanted with the regime,  and, twelve years ago, founded a newsletter to give a voice to ordinary Cubans.

Surprisingly, he edited this while still living in Cuba. (Cuba is not North Korea.) Finally, he moved to Nicaragua, from where he puts it out now.

The Havana Times publishes writings from Cubans across the political spectrum, including from supporters of the regime.   Some of the people who write for it are self-proclaimed socialists, others libertarians, others... well, all human life is there.

Here's what you can do to support The Havana Times: just subscribe to it.  It's free.

If you want to send them a few dollars, that would no doubt be most welcome.  But the main thing is that these people should feel that they are not isolated, that there are people all around the world who are aware of their existence.

And it's a pretty interesting read, as well.

You can get a lot further in life with a kind word and a gun, than you can with a kind word alone.
