‘Pray for us’ message as surging tsunami waves crash in Tonga after one of the most violent Hunga Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai eruption ever captured on satellites

Large waves are washing ashore in Tonga after another violent volcanic eruption hit the island nation – and Government officials issued a second tsunami warning in two days. This is the second major eruption of the volcano in less than a month.

There is so much material ejected into the sky that it has turned black!

The tsunami alert follows yesterday’s eruption of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai, an underwater volcano, sending ash, steam and gas up to 17km into the air.

Volcanic ash is currently raining down on Nuku’alofa, Tonga’s capital.

A volcano explodes off the island of Tonga blasting dust an incredible 60,000ft, almost 20km into the sky which will have a cooling climate effect for at least the next couple of months at least: The blast was almost as strong as the Krakatau eruption which caused a volcanic winter

The Big Wobble 1/15/2022

Credit, Tonga Geological Services: The eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai volcano sent shockwaves across the South Pacific. Tonga's capital lies just 65km north of the volcano.

An underwater volcano has erupted off the island of Tonga blasting rocks, ash and steam an incredible 60,000ft, almost 20km into the sky which will have a cooling climate effect for at least the next couple of months and depending on the duration and size of the eruption could cool the planet...

The shock wave from the eruption is expected to reverberate around the world and windows have been broken from the blast hundreds of km's away.

The strength of the massive eruption was VEI 5, let me put that into some kind of perspective, the famous Krakatau eruption in 1883 was a VEI 6. According to Wikipedia, the Krakatau eruption caused a volcanic winter. In the year following the eruption, average Northern Hemisphere summer temperatures fell by 0.4 °C (0.72 °F). The record rainfall that hit Southern California during the water year from July 1883 to June 1884 – Los Angeles received 970 millimetres (38.18 in) and San Diego 660 millimetres (25.97 in) – has been attributed to the Krakatoa eruption. This eruption could be the perfect geological event to cool the planet and will have the climate change people jumping with joy!

Tsunami hits:
Quote
Tsunami waves caused by a giant underwater volcanic eruption have hit the Pacific country of Tonga.

Social media footage showed water washing through a church and several homes, and witnesses said ash was falling over the capital, Nuku'alofa.

A tsunami warning sent residents scrambling to higher ground.

The eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai volcano was heard across the South Pacific, reportedly as far as New Zealand and Australia.

Tonga's capital lies just 65km north of the volcano, on the country's main island of Tongatapu.  ...

Prof Shane Cronin, a volcanologist at the University of Auckland, said the eruption was one of the biggest in Tonga in the past 30 years.

"This is a pretty big event - it's one of the more significant eruptions of the last decade at least," he told the BBC.

"The most remarkable thing about it is how rapidly and violently it's spread. This one was larger, a much wider lateral spread, much more ash was produced. I expect there to be many centimetres of ash that have been deposited on Tonga."

The initial eight-minute eruption was so violent it could be heard as "loud thunder sounds" in Fiji, more than 800km (500 miles) away, according to officials in the capital, Suva. The Fijian Government has issued a tsunami advisory and opened evacuation centres for people in low-lying coastal areas. ...

When told of the eruption and the volcanoes spewing of enormous quantities of green house gasses into the atmosphere Greta had this to say.

Interesting video discussing how the Tonga volcanic explosion was captured by weather satellites, and how the pressure wave from the explosion was recorded by weather stations around the world.

'Once in a THOUSAND years explosion': Death toll is unknown on ash-choked Tonga after underwater volcano sparked deadly tsunami wiping out internet on island paradise - two die in Peru as waves smash Latin America and US West coast

The 'violent' underwater volcanic eruption was labelled by scientists as a 'once in a thousand years explosion'
It hit the Pacific at 5.10pm local time, and was so huge the explosion was visible from outer space
Around 20 minutes later, Tonga was hit with waves which overwhelmed homes, buildings, fences and roads
Dramatic video from Tonga showed huge waves crashing into homes and buildings, flooding the island
Satellite images showed a huge three-mile-wide plume of ash and steam rising into the air to about 12 miles

An underwater volcano that erupted in Tonga was a 'massive explosion' that only happens 'roughly every thousand years' and was so large it was visible from space.

The explosion triggered a 7.4 magnitude earthquake and ent tsunami waves crashing into the coast of the Pacific island, and left it covered in ash and cut off from aid.

In the US, waves of up to 4.1 feet were recorded in Port San Luis on Saturday, and tsunami-effect waves were recorded along the coast in California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska.

Satellite images showed the spectacular eruption from space and despite the dire warnings, spectators flocked to the beaches to view the surging tsunami waves, while surfers threw caution to the wind to catch the powerful waves generated by the surge.

Tsunami-hit Tonga remained largely uncontactable on Sunday with telephone and internet links severed, leaving relatives in faraway New Zealand praying for their families on the Pacific islands as casualty reports had yet to come through.

Professor Shane Cronin, from the University of Auckland, is an expert in Tonga eruptions. 'This is one of the massive explosions the volcano is capable of producing roughly every thousand years,' he wrote in The Conversation.

Prayers for those affected. When one witnesses what the Earth is capable of it highlights how ridiculous it is that some mere humans believe that the Earth can be affected by man in his puniness.

Tonga tsunami: Anxious wait for news after Tonga cut off

BBC 1/17/2022

Tongans living overseas are facing an anxious wait for news of loved ones after a volcano triggered a tsunami.

The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai volcano erupted on Saturday, about 65km (40 miles) north of the capital Nuku'alofa.

The eruption, which was heard as far away as the US, caused waves higher than a metre to crash into Tonga.

The authorities have not confirmed any deaths but communications are crippled, making it difficult to establish the scale of the destruction.

But a British woman, Angela Glover, died after being swept away in the waves, her brother says.

More than 10,000km away, two people drowned off a beach in northern Peru amid abnormally high waves.

Both New Zealand and Australia sent surveillance flights to find out more, with New Zealand saying there had been "significant damage" along the western coast of Tongatapu, Tonga's main island.

For many Tongans living overseas, it has been two days since they have been able to speak to family and friends.

Petilise Tuima told the Sydney Morning Herald that the last time she spoke to her family was on Saturday afternoon when they were fleeing to higher ground.

"Everyone is calling each other within our Tongan groups, wanting to see if anyone has picked up or heard anything... We are just desperate," she said.

•   Tonga communications 'may be down for two weeks'

•   Satellites key to understanding Pacific volcano

The Ha'atafu Beach Resort on Tongatapu was "completely wiped out" and "the whole western coastline completely destroyed", according to a post on the resort's Facebook page written by contacts overseas.

The post said those living there "just managed to get to safety running through the bushes and escaping", and were "not able to save anything".

The Pacific correspondent for Television New Zealand, Barbara Dreaver, wrote on Facebook that it would take "at least two weeks before international phones and internet are working again", due to damage inflicted on a critical submarine cable as a result of the volcanic eruption.

The Red Cross said even satellite phones, used by many aid agencies, had poor service due to the effects of the ash cloud. The organisation estimates that up to 80,000 people may have been affected by the tsunami.

Tonga is made up of 170 islands scattered over about 700,000 sq km. About 100,000 people live in Tonga, the bulk of them on Tongatapu Island.
