Should Donald Trump run in 2024?
By Patrick J. Gibbs

With the turn of the calendar to 2022, Republicans are not only looking to the 2022 midterm elections but to the prospect of Donald Trump running in 2024. Trump is hugely popular with the party’s base and that popularity freezes the plans of other possible candidates for the 2024 nomination. Trump’s hold on that nomination is brittle, however, because of his age. On election day in 2024 Donald Trump will be 78 years old. That is one year older than Ronald Reagan’s age when he left office in 1988.

Looking at the 2024 contest from the other side of the race, there is no reason to expect that Joe Biden will get the nomination. He has been in office for less than one year, and only diehard Democrats believe that he is not suffering from incapacitating mental deficits. The only question is which foreign adversary will take advantage of his weakness: China, Russia or Iran. So the most likely scenario is for Biden’s resignation in 2022 or early 2023.

Trump may be popular now, but once the voters have been shocked by the disaster of one  septuagenarian president why would they roll the dice on a 78-year-old Donald Trump holding office to age 82? It’s a very bad bet, especially when there are younger, capable Republicans available. Ron DeSantis is at the top of the list of strong candidates for the presidency, but by 2023 we should have other governors and several senators eager to reach for the nomination.

It’s early now and we will have plenty of opportunity to scrutinize folks like DeSantis, Youngkin(sp) etc

A part of me wants him to run just to piss off Absalom.

Comrade Briefers, the question is rhetorical, and as such has no meaning nor impact.

Mr. Trump will run in 2024, and he will become the candidate.

Whether he will WIN in 2024 will depend on how much care The Party has taken to refine and improve its underground election apparatus. The Party has the positive results of 2020 upon which to build, and believes its chances to repeat such results as good as or better than in the previous election...

Why shouldn't Trump run in 2024?  He hasn't been legally disqualified from seeking office.

If the other GOP Pretenders to the Oval Office want to be President, they'll need to prove their value by WINNING.

Trump's opponents will need to demonstrate that they have more fortitude than an airport windsock.

DeSantis has stated that he's not interested. He's taking care of FL. (Also his wife was just dxd with breast cancer -- I don't see him running).

If he runs in 2024 and wins, does that count as his second term or does he get to run for re election in 2028?

It counts as his second term. 22nd Amendment

Section 1

No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this Article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President, when this Article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this Article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.

My wife and I wondered about that because we haven't had this situation since  presidents were regulated to just two terms

He won't run because Trump will attack him and ruin his prospects for 2028.  After Trump loses again, the party (and the country) should be ready for a change of direction in 2028.

If not Trump, then who?

DeSantis, Cruz, Haley, any GOP governor from the Great Plains who pursued sensible policies vis-a-vis COVID mitigation, any GOP Senator who previously served as governor of his or her state.  It's not like the GOP has a short bench like the 'Rats do.
And when they behead your own people in the wars which are to come, then you will know what this was all about.

@cato potatoe   DeSantis wouldn't run against Donald Trump because he's a Trump mini-me and not an opponent --- and proudly so

We need him here in FL.  The guy is our last defense against the liberal onslaught to remake our state.

I think it iwill all depend on the 2022 mid-terms.
If the GOP wins back the house and the senate, AND IF, the GOP breaks down the socialist agenda, then the GOP may win back the white house.
But if the GOP does what it always does and complain and sit on their thumbs, then there is no way they can win the white house no matter who runs.
