This is exactly how Communist Liberals think. There was an article a couple of weeks ago in which some Democrat Communist was ranting that crime in Red States is the same as crime in Blue States. His postulation was that Red States are simply suppressing crime statistics and not reporting crimes like Blue States do.

Pure projection and jealousy. Liberals are trying to say that the exponential increase in crime is because of the pandemic and has nothing to do with their ridiculously retarded pro-crime policies. However, that excuse does not work when the Red States are all showing very little change in crime or even a downward trend in crimes. So the Leftists are pushing the lie that rampant crime is a 'national phenomenon' when in reality it is only happening in Blue States and Democrat run Cities.
