DOJ sues Texas in voting rights lawsuit, alleging discrimination against Black and Latino voters

The Justice Department took new aim at Texas Monday, alleging that the state's new redistricting plans discriminate against Black and Latino voters.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said the state's redistricting maps approved by the Texas Legislature earlier this year effectively dilute the voting strength of people of color.

"The right to vote is foundational to our democracy," Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta said, adding that the federal government's complaint claims that Black and Latino voters have been denied an "equal opportunity" to participate in the voting process because of the reconfiguration of state voting districts.

"Several of the districts were drawn with discriminatory intent," Gupta said.

Gupta characterized the state's redistricting effort as a "rushed process" that allowed for limited public involvement and was approved with an "overall disregard" for the increases in the state's minority population............

U.S. Department of Justice sues Texas over new political maps

Texas lawmakers illegally discriminated against voters of color by drawing new political districts that give white voters more political power despite rapid growth of Hispanic and Black populations, the department claims in its lawsuit.

The U.S. Department of Justice is throwing its weight into the legal fight over Texas’ newly drawn maps for Congress and the state House, filing a lawsuit Monday that claims Texas lawmakers discriminated against voters of color by denying Latino and Black voters equal opportunities to participate in the voting process and elect their preferred candidates.

The Biden administration filed its lawsuit in federal court in Texas, joining what’s expected to be a protracted fight over the political boundaries the state will use for elections to come. It joins a collection of individual voters and organizations representing voters of color that have already sued the state over maps that help solidify the GOP’s dominance while weakening the influence of voters of color.

The maps face at least five legal challenges based on claims that the districts drawn by the Texas Legislature are unconstitutional and violate the federal Voting Rights Act because they diminish the voting strength of voters of color.

The justice department suit also asks the federal court to block the state from conducting the upcoming March primaries under the challenged maps.

At a press conference Monday, U.S. Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta said the maps passed into law by the Republican-controlled Legislature showed an "overall disregard for the massive minority population growth" the state experienced over the last decade.

"Our investigation determined that Texas' redistricting plans will dilute the increased minority voting strength that should have developed from these significant demographic shifts," Gupta said.

Not a democracy.  And he wants ILLEGALS  TO VOTE. That is against our REPUBLIC AND CONSTITUTION.  He throws in blacks to get more clout.  No one black is stopped from voting, if they are citizens.

Justice Department sues Texas over redistricting plan

While the Supreme Court has maintained the practice of drawing new congressional and legislative maps for political advantage is not up for review by federal courts, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 states redistricting plans that disproportionately affect minority groups is illegal.

Garland said the redistricting maps violate Section Two of the Voting Rights Act. The new lines create two new districts in the state and make several existing districts less competitive for Republicans.

"The Department of Justice's absurd lawsuit against our state is the Biden Administration's latest ploy to control Texas voters," the office of Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton tweeted Monday.

Texas Attorney General
@TXAG
The Department of Justice's absurd lawsuit against our state is the Biden Administration's latest ploy to control Texas voters. I am confident that our legislature's redistricting decisions will be proven lawful, and this preposterous attempt to sway democracy will fail.

IF TX doesn't win, look for the DOJ to sue other states; it will have a domino effect.

If they are able to throw out the redistricting maps, then they will cause a SUPER RUSHED REMAPPING to take place as the Early Voting for the primaries starts in mid Feb.

We uphold our own sovereignty, Garland.

He comes after us while New York is trying to add millions of non-citizens to the voter rolls.

"Garland said the redistricting maps violate Section Two of the Voting Rights Act."

I've posted in the forum before that two of the most destructive pieces of legislation ever passed in this country were the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act, both passed in the mid-60's. No good has ever come from either of them.

Hopefully Texas will draw a good judge who tosses the case...

By portion of population, African-Americans are overrepresented in Texas' US House delegation.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

Merrick Garland Announces Department of Justice Will Try to Block Texas' Redistricting Plan
By streiff | Dec 08, 2021 4:30 PM ET

These United States are in the midst of creating new Congressional maps for the 2022 election., Things don’t look great for the Democrats. Not only did core Democrat states lose population because large numbers of their citizens voted with their feet, but those citizens also ended up in Red States. Making matters worse for the Democrats, in 23 states, the GOP controls the state legislature and the governor’s mansion. The Democrats only have that advantage in 14 states. So while Illinois Democrats can rejoice at forcing arch-conservative Adam Kinzinger from office, Texas gains two seats.

Naturally, the Department of Justice has entered the fray.

What would be awesome is if they could point to IL and tell the judge that they are more gerrymandered than TX.
