With 59 Days to Go, WH Announces Diplomatic Boycott of Beijing Olympics Over CCP Rights Abuses After more than ten months of consideration and consultation with “partners and allies,” the Biden administration on Monday announced a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics over the Chinese Communist Party’s human rights record.
The decision, coming less than 60 days before the games open in the Chinese capital, was welcomed on both sides of the aisle on Capitol Hill.
There was no immediate response from Beijing, although a foreign ministry spokesman earlier on Monday said China would “take resolute countermeasures” in the event of a boycott decision, reiterating its often-repeated stance that the Olympics should not be politicized.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC), which has sought to defend its decision to allow China to host the games by saying it must remain politically neutral, has also yet to react.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki attributed the decision not to send any official or diplomatic representation to Beijing to the “ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity in Xinjiang and other human rights abuses.”...........
