Parents of Oxford school shooting suspect Ethan Crumbley charged with involuntary manslaughter

Ethan Crumbley’s parents have been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection to the Michigan school shooting allegedly carried out by their 15-year-old son.

The charges for James and Jennifer Crumbley stem from having purchased a gun for the teen in the days ahead of the deadly shooting.

Their son is already being held without bail on murder and terrorism charges over Tuesday’s Oxford High School rampage that left four dead and seven injured in the deadliest US school shooting of the year.

Officials had hinted for days that the parents — who told their son not to talk to investigators — could face charges.

The dad had bought the semi-automatic 9mm Sig Sauer handgun his son allegedly used just four days earlier, on Black Friday, officials previously revealed.

The second-year student then posed with it on social media, which suggested it was “freely available” in the family home before the slaughter, Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald previously said.

In this case, I think the charges are justified. Hours before the shooting the parents were called into a meeting because a teacher saw disturbing drawings and writings the boy had made and they just left him at school. I think the first thing any responsible parent would have done was take their clearly disturbed child home and try to figure out what help they could get for him.

Prosecutor Charges Parents in Michigan School Shooting; Says They Should Have Searched Son’s Bag

Oakland County, Michigan Prosecutor Karen McDonald announced Friday that the parents of the Oxford High School shooter were being charged with involuntary manslaughter in the deaths of four students earlier this week.

McDonald, a Democrat, said that the parents were culpable because they ought to have known that their son was emotionally disturbed and ought to have prevented him from taking a handgun to school.

McDonald described the events leading up to the shooting, noting that the shooter’s father, James Crumbley, had bought a handgun for his son, and that the shooter’s mother, Jennifer Crumbley, had posted proudly about it on social media.

When their son was caught in school using his cell phone to search for information about ammunition, Mrs. Crumbley allegedly made light of the school’s concerns, telling her son that the lesson of the episode was that he should “learn not to get caught.”

The prosecutor then said that the day before the shooting, a teacher noticed that the shooter had created a drawing with a gun, bloody victims, and messages such as “the thoughts won’t stop, help me.”

The parents were summoned to meet with their son and the principal the next day. There, they were told they had to obtain counseling for their son within 48 hours. According to McDonald, they resisted the idea that their son should be pulled out of school immediately over the disturbing drawing.

A statewide "Be on the Lookout" (BOLO) alert was issued for James and Jennifer Crumbley Friday, two police departments confirmed to FOX 2 Detroit.

The two parents are each facing four counts of involuntary manslaughter after their 15-year-old son was accused of killing four students after opening fire inside Oakland High School earlier this week., according to Oakland County prosecutor Karen McDonald.

The parents were told to get their son into counseling within 48 hours, McDonald said. Neither parent asked their son to see the gun or "inspect his backpack for the presence of the gun which he had with him," according to McDonald.

The parents left school and the boy was sent back to class.

The parents of the Michigan teen accused of opening fire on his high school earlier this week appeared dazed and a bit disheveled when they were arrested.

Jennifer and James Crumbley were found inside a commercial building about 50 miles away from their Oxford, Michigan, home early Saturday, after a tip from the building’s owner, who saw their SUV there, the Detroit Free Press reported.

The couple dodged authorities for hours after they were expected to turn themselves in.

They are charged with involuntary manslaughter . . .

Michigan couple pleads not guilty to involuntary manslaughter charges in school shooting

The parents of a Michigan student who is accused of killing four classmates and wounding seven others during a mass shooting at Oxford High School on Tuesday pled not guilty to four counts of involuntary manslaughter charges.

James and Jennifer Crumbley appeared for an arraignment at an Oakland court Saturday morning after they were apprehended by police in Detroit and detained in the Oakland County Jail.

Prosecutors charged the couple with involuntary manslaughter after it was revealed that their 15-year-old son took the 9 mm semi-automatic handgun he used in the mass shooting from their home.

The bond for each individual was set at $500,000, and the Crumbleys were ordered to turn in any firearms they have.

HOW...can they charge the 15 year old....as an ADULT.....then go after the parents? ONE WAY OR THE OTHER.

The same as one of your children does a crime as adult...yet, they go after...you!

Emotions are high but I think they are over charging the parents since as I understand it Michigan has no law requiring that firearms in a home be secured and locked. Also their argument that they should have known their child was having mental issues? There are maybe millions of parents that have no clue as to what is really going on with their kids. If the parents are culpable than so are the principal and others at the school for not taking greater action when the boys drawing was found. That drawing is actually a red flag and seems the school to ok less action than other schools did with kids for just drawing a gun or eating a pop tart which in the process looked vaguely gun shaped.

Sheriff: Police looking to charge person who allegedly helped hide parents of suspected school shooter

Police are looking to charge a person who assisted in hiding the parents of the suspected Michigan school shooter.

James and Jennifer Crumbley were arrested inside a Detroit art studio at 1:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard told reporters at a press conference later that day. A witness called the police after seeing their car parked outside, he said, adding that someone had let them into the building.

"We believe they were assisted in that location to get there, to get in," Bouchard said, saying the prosecutors could charge the individual who allegedly assisted them with aiding and abetting or obstruction of justice.

Jennifer and James Crumbley reportedly fled on Friday before they were arrested by police. Defense attorneys for the couple have argued they were going to turn themselves in before the arraignment.

Bouchard said some communication that the parents were going to turn themselves in was received, but that police "don't wait for that."

"When we have serious charges like felonies, you can turn yourself in ... but we're going to go look for you immediately," he said. "To us that's irrelevant, we're looking for them. If they show up, fine. But we're not going to sit on the front desk and tap our fingers until they come in."

And told to get the child counseling within 48 hrs. by the school, that tells me that the school was not as concerned in that meeting with parents as they are making out now after the killings. Don't misunderstand me, I'm not excusing the parents, the parents bear some responsibility in that they didn't have more control of the weapons in their home, I just don't see involuntary manslaughter as a realistic charge.

The school knew, too. But they sent the kid back to class.
