Splash! Another Kamala Harris staffer jumps ship

For Kamala Harris, she must be uttering the rich lady's lament right about now: you just can't get good staff anymore.

This time, a big one has flown the coop, a veritable whale of a woman in significance, spokeswoman Symone Sanders.  She's by far the highest-ranking Kamala official now to get the heck out of Dodge.  Her exit follows a lot of other exits, which I wrote about here.  And apparently, it's not going to be the last one.  These guys plan to leave after Sanders leaves.

Why would she do that?  Two reasons stand out.

One, working for Kamala Harris is hell.

Another Kamala Harris aide is quitting her post. The Vice President’s senior advisor and chief spokesperson, Symone Sanders, is leaving by the end of the year, according to Axios.

“Why it matters: The VP has faced an onslaught of criticism in her first year centered on her leadership and staff, adding to the suggestion, she’s not the Democratic Party’s preferred nominee for 2024,” Axios reported.

Report: Kamala Harris Abandoned by Four Senior Staffers in One Month

Four senior staffers have reportedly abandoned Vice President Kamala Harris in less than one month’s time.

The staffers have either resigned or plan to leave their positions amid “disorder, bad press, and, at times, internal frictions,” Politico analyzed. The conflicts began in July, when Harris’s staffers leaked inner clashes to the establishment media, suggesting the vice president’s office has “treated [them] like shit” in an “abusive environment.”

Other staffers have revealed their frustration that “white man” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s potential 2024 presidential bid is “disrespectful” to their boss, though Buttigieg has downplayed his ambitions.

Buttigieg will likely benefit from President Biden’s $1.2 trillion infrastructure package as a key power broker in Washington, DC. Harris, meanwhile, was given the task of curtaining the southern border crisis that is producing a record amount of migrant inflows.

The latest resignation from Harris’s staff is Senior Adviser Symone Sanders, who announced Thursday she will leave her position at the end of the year to pursue other opportunities outside. Her announcement read in part:

I’m so grateful to the VP for her vote of confidence from the very beginning and the opportunity to see what can be unburdened by what has been. I’m grateful for [Harris chief of staff] Tina [Flournoy] and her leadership and her confidence as well.

Staffers who have worked for Kamala Harris say one of her consistent problems is that she refuses to wade into briefing materials prepared by staff members, then berates employees when she appears unprepared because she wouldn’t do the necessary prep work.

It was announced last week that Harris’ senior adviser Symone Sanders will leave her post by the end of the year, and according to people familiar with conversations on resignations, "key members of Harris’ orbit are leaving and even more are eyeing the exits," Politico reported Saturday.

The report comes after Harris’ communications director Ashley Etienne resigned ahead of Thanksgiving, and two other communication aides are reportedly planning to leave their posts soon.

Better for her to stick it out and get into a drawn-out fight with Biden and his puppeteers.  They will tie the executive branch up in nasty ugly knots and it will become crystal clear to all but the most inveterate of DNC voters that they cannot govern.

When Kamala Harris made Joe Biden’s shortlist for vice president last year, Willie Brown offered a surprising take.

“If Joe Biden offers the vice presidential slot to Sen. Kamala Harris, my advice to her would be to politely decline,” the ex-mayor wrote in the San Francisco Chronicle.

If she did accept the job, he said, “the glory would be short-lived, and historically, the vice presidency has often ended up being a dead end.” He urged Harris to hold out for a position with “legitimate power,” like United States Attorney General. Of course, his counterintuitive suggestion was soon drowned out by fanfare for Biden’s historic choice of VP Harris.

At the time, Brown’s opinion seemed like contrarian clickbait. Yet recent press coverage indicates he made a fair point. Highly detailed media reports depict a VP dreadfully unhappy in the role. Her misery has company: One outlier poll showed her with a shockingly low approval rating of 28%. The number led some media outlets to call her the most unpopular vice president in modern history – even worse than Dick Cheney, who bottomed out at 30%.

Making matters worse: The only people suffering more than Harris are her staff members, some of whom have already quit their plum positions amid reports of a toxic office environment. Those who remain appear to be engaged in open warfare with their counterparts on President Biden’s staff. (As this column went to press, Harris appeared to be experiencing another staff exodus, with CNN, Politico and CBS News reporting the pending departures of her chief spokesperson and her director of press operations. Two weeks ago, Vanity Fair reported that Harris’ communications director was also leaving to pursue “other opportunities.”)

Such tales of chaos have a familiar ring to longtime Harris watchers in California. As a former Harris staffer who quit after five months in 2013, I’m not surprised. Still, it’s sad to see her repeat the same old destructive patterns under the harsh gaze of the Washington press corps.

“Worn out by what they see as entrenched dysfunction and lack of focus, key West Wing aides have largely thrown up their hands at Vice President Kamala Harris and her staff – deciding there simply isn’t time to deal with them right now, especially at a moment when President Joe Biden faces quickly multiplying legislative and political concerns,” wrote CNN’s Edward-Isaac Dovere and Jasmine Wright in a lengthy story headlined “Exasperation and Dysfunction: Inside Kamala Harris’ frustrating start as vice president.”

The piece, informed by “three dozen” interviews with Democratic insiders, did Harris no favors. Her supporters blamed Biden for “sidelining” her. Anonymous Harris critics fired back, telling CNN that “Harris’ staff has repeatedly failed her and left her exposed, and family members have often had an informal say within her office. Even some who have been asked for advice lament Harris’ overly cautious tendencies and staff problems, which have been a feature of every office she’s held, from San Francisco district attorney to US Senate.”
