Dear d**khead: the U.S. (nor any other country) will never "beat" the COVID-19 virus for the simple reason that it is a coronavirus, a respiratory virus that indefinitely circulates among the broader human population (and other reserve species), periodically mutating to maintain its ability to infect new hosts.
Exactly like the seasonal flu (of which 20% to 30% of all cases are in fact caused by coronaviruses, not influenza viruses).
In short, this variant of the coronavirus family will become just another garden variety endemic virus, and the sooner we can get it to that point, the better.
Lockdowns, travel bans, masking, forced vaccinations, and all the other trappings of the political Kabuki theater will not bring us any closer to that point and will, in fact, delay our arrival at that point.
