Iran-Backed Militants Storm US Embassy in Yemen, Seize Hostages and Equipment

State Department 'concerned about the breach of the compound,' demands release of hostages

The State Department is working to secure the release of several hostages taken by Iran-backed terrorists after they stormed the U.S. embassy facility in Sana'a, Yemen, U.S. officials told the Washington Free Beacon early Thursday.

A group of Houthi rebels reportedly stormed the U.S. compound on Wednesday seeking "large quantities of equipment and materials," according to regional reports translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute. The raid comes just five days after the Houthis kidnapped Yemeni nationals who work for the U.S. embassy.

The State Department confirmed to the Free Beacon that the Yemeni staffers are being held hostage and that the Iran-backed militants stole property after breaching the American facility in Sana'a, which housed U.S. embassy staff prior to the suspension of operations there in 2015.

Houthi rebels have stormed the American embassy in Yemen and taken hostages, the Washington Free Beacon reported Thursday.

State Department officials told the Free Beacon that “the majority of the detained have been released, but the Houthis continue to detain additional Yemeni employees of the embassy.”

Houthi fighters reportedly took the compound on Wednesday, demanding “large quantities of equipment and materials,” per the Middle East Media Research Institute. Yemen has been embroiled in a brutal civil war between the Houthi rebels — who are backed, financed, and armed by the Iranian government —and the standing Yemeni government, which has the support of Saudi Arabia. The conflict is oftentimes described as a “proxy war” being fought by the two Yemeni sides on the ground, but largely on behalf of the two larger powers.

Within a month of taking office, President Joe Biden removed the foreign-terrorist organization designation placed on the the Houthis by the Trump administration. The designation had cut the Houthis “off from financial support and other material resources that are routed through U.S. banks or other American institutions.” Secretary of State Antony Blinken called the decision “a recognition of the dire humanitarian situation in Yemen.”

The Trump administration designated the Houthis as a terrorist organization, but that designation was removed when the Biden administration took office—a move that was seen as a goodwill gesture to coax Iran into diplomatic negotiations aimed at securing a revamped version of the 2015 nuclear accord.

Houthi rebels breached the compound in Yemen that housed the American Embassy, which has been closed during the country’s civil war, taking Yemeni employees of the U.S. government hostage.

According to the State Department, the U.S. Ambassador to Yemen and his main staff have been working from the American Embassy in Saudi Arabia since February 2015 due to the ongoing conflict. There are still some Yemeni staff that worked from home or as security guards at the compound, however, Bloomberg reports.

While the State Department said Thursday that a “majority” of hostages that had been detained were released, there are still embassy staff that “continue to be detained without explanation.”

"We have been unceasing in our behind-the-scenes diplomatic efforts to secure their release," Press Secretary Ned Price said Thursday of the security guards still detained. "We’ve seen some progress, and we’re continuing to work this critical issue."

Yemen’s Houthi Terrorists – Delisted by Biden – Stage Mass Kidnapping of U.S. Employees

The State Department said on Thursday that the Iran-backed Houthi insurgency abducted at least 25 Yemenis who work for the United States. President Joe Biden lifted the Houthis’ designation as a terrorist organization as one of his first actions in office.

The State Department claimed most have been released, but “several” employees of what used to be the U.S. embassy in Sana’a – which has not been functioning normally since the Houthis seized the city in 2015 – are still being held captive. The Houthis have also occupied the building that used to house the embassy.

The Biden State Department seems reluctant to make any statement about the hostages unless directly asked about the situation by a media organization. As of Friday morning, no official statement about the situation had been posted by the State Department or White House.

When Al Arabiya, a Saudi news agency, asked for a comment about the detention of local U.S. government employees and seizure of U.S. property by the Houthis, the Biden State Department responded by email, “We are concerned that Yemeni staff of the U.S. Embassy in Sana’a continue to be detained without explanation and we call for their immediate release.”

The State email said most of the detainees have been released, but confirmed, “the Houthis continue to detain additional Yemeni employees of the Embassy.”

Feeble Joe Biden has done it again. During the Trump administration, they designated the Iranian-backed Houthi jihadis in Yemen to be placed on the Terror List. At the time, many liberal groups demanded that they be removed immediately. Trump refused.

Once Biden got in office as he was bending over forward to Iran, he removed the Houthis from the terror list. On Thursday, the Houthi stormed our embassy in Sana’a.

They seized a massive amount of equipment and took hostages. Whew, thank God they are not terrorists. And what is the reaction from the neutered Biden administration? Are we sending in the Marines? Launching our bombers? No, we are counting on diplomacy with the terrorists. My, the terrorists must be shaking in their boots.
