China tested a nuclear-capable hypersonic missile in August that circled the globe before speeding towards its target, demonstrating an advanced space capability that caught US intelligence by surprise.

Five people familiar with the test said the Chinese military launched a rocket that carried a hypersonic glide vehicle which flew through low-orbit space before cruising down towards its target.

The missile missed its target by about two-dozen miles, according to three people briefed on the intelligence. But two said the test showed that China had made astounding progress on hypersonic weapons and was far more advanced than US officials realised.

The test has raised new questions about why the US often underestimated China’s military modernisation.

“We have no idea how they did this,” said a fourth person.  ...

Understand how terrifying it is that China has achieved not only proper miniaturization of boosted fission weaponry, but also a hypersonic  vector.
To say that we really screwed the pooch in letting them get advantage to make this happen is an understatement.

Pentagon says hypersonic weapons are too expensive

WASHINGTON, Oct 12 (Reuters) - The Pentagon wants defense contractors to cut the ultimate cost of hypersonic weapons, the head of research and development said on Tuesday, as the next generation of super-fast missiles being developed currently cost tens of millions per unit.

"We need to figure out how to drive towards more affordable hypersonics," Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Heidi Shyu told reporters at the Association of United States Army conference in Washington. She said cost was something she "would like to help industry focus on."

Currently, the U.S. uses cruise missiles which are mature technologies costing less than $5 million per unit to strike deep into enemy territory. But cruise missiles are inferior to hypersonic weapons because they have a shorter range, are far slower and more vulnerable to being detected and shot down.

Both Lockheed Martin (LMT.N) and Raytheon Technologies (RTX.N) are working on hypersonic weapons for the Pentagon. ...

There are reports that we didn't know about these weapons (or how they did it).  I'm not buying this .... I remember in 2020 POTUS45 talking about the "unbelievable" weapons we were developing.  It also explains Space Force ... preparing for the next global battlefield.

The report, citing multiple sources familiar with the test, said Beijing in August launched a nuclear-capable missile that circled the Earth at low orbit before descending toward its target, which three sources said it missed by over 20 miles (32 kilometers).

China immediately denied it, saying it “was not a missile, it was a space vehicle.” Before the cable news shows could get riled up about what Jeffrey Lewis, a professor at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, described as an armed space shuttle, the Financial Times dropped another bombshell about this hypersonic bomb carrier – there was a second prior test in July.

    “On July 27 the Chinese military launched a rocket that used a “fractional orbital bombardment” system to propel a nuclear-capable “hypersonic glide vehicle” around the earth for the first time, according to four people familiar with US intelligence assessments.”

Should we be concerned that China has twice tested a “fractional orbital bombardment” “hypersonic glide vehicle”? An unnamed person told The Financial Times that the first test stunned the Pentagon and US intelligence, while another said the two demonstrated a new weapons capability which the US does not currently possess – one that appears “to defy the laws of physics.”  ...

One thing you can bet the farm on is the Chinese didn't create or develop this. Too many decades of Communist indoctrination where the peg that stands up and gets noticed gets hammered back down hard guarantees this.

So....,who did they buy it from? Whoever it was,MUST be tracked down and killed.
