Pakistan, China Object as UN Human Rights Council Votes to Monitor Abuses in Afghanistan

The U.N. Human Rights Council on Thursday adopted a resolution establishing a “special rapporteur” to monitor the human rights situation in Afghanistan over the next year, but not before China offered amendments designed both to water down the text and to point fingers at the United States.

China joined Pakistan, Russia, Eritrea and Venezuela’s Maduro regime in opposition to European Union-sponsored resolution, which passed by 28-5 votes, with 14 members abstaining.

Its passage, on the penultimate day of the HRC’s month-long session in Geneva, came six weeks after the council held a “special session” on the crisis in Afghanistan. It ended with a resolution that failed to set up any kind of monitoring mechanism – and did not even mention the Taliban................

The ICC is also shifting focus to investigating Afghan abuses rather than shamvestigating the US. The shift is focus is in the right direction, but the timing proves that the shamvestigation of US had nothing to do with crimes and everything to do with hatred of the US and trying to affect the US' legitimate actions.
