A team of specialists who investigate cold cases says it has identified the Zodiac Killer, one of America's most prolific serial murderers who terrorized communities in the San Francisco area in the late 1960s with a series of brutal slayings and unsolvable riddles.

The Case Breakers, a team of more than 40 former law enforcement investigators, journalists and military intelligence officers, has tackled other mysteries such as the D.B. Cooper hijacking heist, the disappearance of former labor union boss Jimmy Hoffa and other unsolved cases. The group believes the killer is responsible for a slaying hundreds of miles away that was never linked to him.  ...

The Case Breakers is now saying it has identified the Zodiac Killer as Gary Francis Poste, who passed away in 2018. The team's years of digging uncovered new forensic evidence and photos from Poste's darkroom. One image features scars on the forehead of Poste that match scars on a sketch of the Zodiac, the team said.

Other clues include deciphering letters sent by the Zodiac that revealed him as the killer, said Jen Bucholtz, a former Army counterintelligence agent who works on cold cases. In one note, the letters of Poste's full name were removed to reveal an alternate message, she told Fox News.

"So you've got to know Gary's full name in order to decipher these anagrams," Bucholtz said. "I just don't think there's any other way anybody would have figured it out." ...

The FBI says that the Zodiac Killer case is still open despite claims from a group of specialists that they believe they have identified the killer.

“The Zodiac Killer case remains open. We have no new information to share,” the FBI’s San Francisco office told The Hill in a statement on Thursday.

"At this time we are not identifying potential suspects for this open investigation," Adam Lobsinger, a spokesperson for the San Francisco Police Department, told The Hill in a statement. ...

Air Force vet identified as Zodiac Killer suspect but FBI didn't act on DNA proof, group claims
A group called Case Breakers alleges that Gary Francis Poste, who died in 2018, is the Zodiac Killer
By Andrew Mark Miller | Fox News

A volunteer cold case team says an FBI official confirmed the man they believe to be the "Zodiac Killer" is currently listed as a suspect and accuses government agencies across the country of not properly investigating the alleged serial killings.

Thomas Colbert, an investigative journalist and leader of the non-profit volunteer team Case Breakers, said in a press release this week that a whistleblower on his team was told by an FBI agent that Gary Francis Poste, an Air Force veteran, is considered a suspect in a database for the killings and that the lab has a "partial" DNA sample.

"The felon has been secretly listed as the Zodiac ‘suspect’ in Headquarters’ computers since 2016," the group wrote in a press release. "With his ‘partial DNA’ safely secured at the feds’ Quantico, Virginia lab."

The FBI has consistently rejected reports and conclusions that the case has been solved and told Fox News Digital in October 2021 that the case was still open.  ...
Yay, FBI. Competent as ever.

Yes. In response to a Daily Mail story with the headline, "FBI has identified Zodiac Killer as Air Force veteran Gary Francis Poste," he tweeted the following:
