Manchin says his spending limit is $1.5 trillion
By Alexander Bolton - 09/30/21 12:34 PM EDT

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) announced Thursday that his top-line spending number for the budget reconciliation package is $1.5 trillion, far below the $3.5 trillion spending goal set by the budget resolution that he and every other Senate Democrat voted for last month.

“My top-line has been $1.5 [trillion],” he said, explaining that he doesn’t want “to change our whole society to an entitlement mentality.”

Manchin also said that he had shared his figure with President Biden.

The statements from Manchin to a crowd of reporters outside the Capitol comes on a pivotal day for Biden's legislative agenda. The House is scheduled to vote Thursday on a $1.1 trillion infrastructure bill backed by Manchin that passed the Senate, but progressives have threatened to vote against it unless a separate social spending measure is moved in tandem.

Progressives say the floor for that larger bill should be $3.5 trillion, far more than Manchin's proposed $1.5 trillion top-line figure.

The larger bill is being crafted under budget reconciliation rules that prevent Republicans from filibustering the measure in the Senate. But that also effectively hands veto power to any Democratic senator who wants to oppose it.

You think $3.5T had infighting?  Just wait till the democrats starting going all hyena on the taxpayer carcass if they have to fight for scraps from the $1.5T Porkulus.

It doesn't matter what number they get. They will spend what they want to.

They can get nothing and like it.  The Federal Reserve may be able to print money, but I'm not.

Even 1.5 trillion is madness. In 2008 the entire annual US budget was around 5 trillion. We’ve spent over TWICE that in emergency spending in the past twelve months.

The argument among Democrats:

"We must spend like drunken sailors!"
"No, we must spend like heavily inebriated sailors."
"Drunken!"
"Heavily inebriated."

Meanwhile the Republicans, who are merely moderately inebriated, scratch their heads in wonder.

When the liberals around here want to raise property taxes, they used to only offer one proposal, but they kept getting defeated.

Then the libs learned to submit multiple property tax hike proposals:

1st would be a number beyond real.  Its purpose was to make the remaining proposals modest in comparison.

2nd would be a reach number, but it would appear more reasonable compared to the 1st.

3rd would be a number they could live with, that would look more reasonable compared to the 1st and 2nd.

Maybe the Libs' plan was to float $3.5 trillion to make $1.5 trillion look more reasonable.

Instead of nanny government taking care of us from cradle to grave, why don't they reduce payroll taxes, consumption taxes, government fees, and property taxes that comprise their oppressive tax regime.

Instead of critical race theory, what about critical class theory to address the institutionalized systemic classism that oppresses poor and working families?

Hey Joe, do you have a limit on WHAT it is spent on or WHY it should be spent?

Seems that rather than the amount is more important, don't you know?
