Aviation enthusiasts are on tenterhooks as they expect a deployment of USAF bombers to arrive at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire this week.

Images of a huge C-5 military transport aircraft have been posted on social media and it is understood it has brought B-1B bomber engines to the base in the Cotswolds.

The C-5 touched down in the early hours of Sunday morning ahead of the expected arrival of the B-1B Lancer variable-sweep heavy bombers. A C-17 military transporter is also expected.

The C-5M is the United States Air Force's largest airlifter and can carry more cargo over further distances than any other planes. It can carry six mine resistant ambush protected vehicles and up to five helicopters.
