NY man sneaks onto Fort Drum base, injures soldier and steals Humvee

August 21, 2021 James McClendon - syracuse.com

A Jefferson County man was arrested Thursday after he snuck onto the Fort Drum base, injured a solider and stole a military Humvee, troopers said.

Nathan J. McElhone, 46, of Theresa, was accused of driving onto the base near Training Range 41B and stealing the military Humvee at about 5 a.m. Thursday, according to a news release issued by New York state police.

While stealing the Humvee, McElhone injured the soldier who was trying to stop him, troopers said. The severity of the soldier’s injuries was not immediately revealed by state police.

Members of a military unit stopped McElhone before he left the base and he was handed over to Military Police, troopers said. He was in possession of several stolen military items including targets and a wooden shelving unit, they said.

To me, one of the things the military should have learned from Afghanistan is to tighten security with the Talilban being major players in terrorism.  I guess it's something the military hasn't learned yet. :pondering:
