International Emmys rescinds Cuomo's honorary award

The International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced on Tuesday that it has rescinded an honorary Emmy awarded to former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) last year.

The organization said in a statement that “in light of the New York Attorney General’s report, and Andrew Cuomo’s subsequent resignation as Governor, it is rescinding his special 2020 International Emmy Award. His name and any reference to his receiving the award will be eliminated from International Academy materials going forward," according to Variety.

Cuomo was awarded the International Emmy Founders Award for "effective communication and leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic,” the news outlet noted.


At the time, International Academy president and CEO Bruce L. Paisner lauded Cuomo for the way he used television in order to bring New Yorkers a sense of calm at the start of the pandemic.

(Associated Press) Hours after leaving office, scandal-tainted former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo suffered another defeat Tuesday, losing the special Emmy Award he received last year for his daily, televised briefings on the coronavirus pandemic.

The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences said in a statement that given Cuomo’s resignation amid a torrent of sexual harassment allegations it was taking away the prize and removing any reference to him in its official materials.

A message seeking comment was left with Cuomo’s lawyer.

Cuomo left office at 12 a.m. Tuesday, two weeks after he announced he would resign rather than face an impeachment battle that seemed inevitable after a report by independent investigators — overseen by state Attorney General Letitia James — concluded he had sexually harassed 11 women.

My question is:  how could the TV Academy be so stupid, or ignorant, or lame brained, or biased, or incompetent to have given the award to him to begin with?

I thought that was one of the most bizarre events in this sordid story.  Abandoning their pets in a locked house is what low-income people do when they are evicted, or their mortgages are foreclosed.

Meanwhile, while the Emmy was "revoked," I have no doubt he will not be returning the statue.
