An off-duty New Orleans police officer visiting a Houston upscale Galleria-area restaurant is dead and another person is seriously wounded after gunmen opened fire during a robbery.

A group of four men visiting Houston sat down to dinner Saturday night on the patio of an upscale Galleria-area restaurant. The group included an off-duty New Orleans police officer, Houston Police Department officials said.

Two armed men approached the group and demanded they turn over their belongings, KHOU CBS11 reported. Witnesses said the diners were complying with the gunmen’s orders when one of the gunmen opened fire.

The two gunmen fatally wounded the New Orleans police officer and left a second person seriously wounded, Houston Police officials tweeted.

The Galleria appears to be no longer a nice place to visit.

I bet a lot of wealthy restauranteers in that area are freaking out right now, about the security of their big investments.

Plenty of upscale restaurants up and down Westheimer and Richmond.  Notice in the article.  They said the victims were sitting in the patio.  And some of those places have egress from their patios.

I always felt safe at these places.  Now....  maybe not as much.

I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.

Robbers will always go where the money is.  Nice restaurant, lots more cash.

Next will come car robberies in broad daylight as you are stopped at an intersection.  Mercs and BMWs will be targeted as once again that is where the money is.

Better to not to visit the nice places, do not drive expensive cars unless you carry, and best of all avoid the big cities in the first place as it can kill you.

Remember, this was a black guy killed by black thugs and he had extensive training as a police officer in a violent city like New Orleans and he was STILL murdered in spite of the thieves getting nothing.

They caught two of them, who were out on bail for other criminal activity.

'Death is on the table,' 2 charged with capital murder of off-duty New Orleans PD officer killed in Houston

It's been nearly a week since Everett Briscoe, a 13-year-veteran with the New Orleans PD was killed in Houston.

The officer was dining with a group of friends outside Grotto Ristorante, a popular restaurant in the Galleria area last Saturday. Investigators said two unidentified men came to the restaurant with guns drawn to rob the group but shot two people, one of them was officer Briscoe, who sadly succumbed to his injuries.
The second victim, Dyrin "DJ" Riculfy, remains hospitalized in serious condition.

The shooters then fled the scene shortly after the attack, but HPD Chief Troy Finner and other city leaders vowed they would be caught.

And during a press conference Friday, the chief, Mayor Sylvester Turner, and Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced the two suspects were arrested and charged with capital murder.

According to the district attorney, both suspects were reportedly out on bonds, but are working to ensure they do not face a bond this time. Additionally, Ogg says the suspects could face the death penalty as Capital Murder is one of the highest crimes a suspect can be given.

"Death is on the table," Ogg explained.

Officials were unable to disclose more information on what led up to Briscoe's death but were said to have specifically targeted random individuals in the Galleria area to rob them. And on that Saturday, it appears to have been an aggravated robbery that turned sideways.

DA Ogg said there is a third suspect still at large, however, they are looking to capture soon and ensure justice is served.
