National security adviser Jake Sullivan confirmed the Taliban has seized a “fair amount” of U.S. military equipment in Afghanistan Tuesday, adding that the U.S. is unsure where much of the material has gone.

President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from Afghanistan left billions of dollars worth of firearms, vehicles and other military equipment in the hands of the Taliban. The “defense material” was intended for use by the Afghan government, but its military dissolved in the face of Taliban aggression in a matter of days. Sullivan made the announcement during a White House press briefing, where reporters pressed him in particular on why the administration allowed the Taliban to acquire state-of-the-art military equipment such as Black Hawk helicopters.
