Oregon’s lockdown-loving Democrat Gov. Kate Brown has quietly signed a law that drops reading, writing, and math proficiency requirements as a condition for obtaining a high school diploma in the state.

Concepts such as identity politics and equity, which have gained traction in the progressive education sector particularly in blue states, are apparently the underlying motivations.

Brown signed SB 744 — which was supported nearly unanimously by Democrats — back in mid-July, but reportedly never held a signing ceremony, issued a press release, or actually made any public comment about the legislation. It was also a late entry into the legislative database.

The law reportedly suspends the “essential skills graduation requirement” at least until 2024 or perhaps through 2027 while the state’s education department conducts a review and makes recommendations for the high school diploma.

The state had already put the graduation requirements, which only requires freshman/sophomore-level skills, on hold during the pandemic.

Regardless of what the article says, this is all about Black people and only Black people.

So, basically, if you go to an employer with an Oregon state high school diploma, they will presume that you aren't proficient in math, reading, or writing, and classify your application accordingly, whether you are, in fact, proficient or not.

Gooberment has been working hard for several decades to make a high school diploma worthless. Barring an unforeseeable reversal, that effort is nearing completion.

Prospective employers are going to have to pretzellate themselves insanely to figure out if a job applicant is actually capable of doing the job. In the near and medium term, this will favor applicants with resumes' replete with job experience and disfavor applicants without demonstrable job experience. It will get crazier and riskier for employers as people with bona fide experience retire or die off.

The one group this does help are the colleges - mostly non-profit - that prey on students for loan-financed tuition.  Once the Oregon high school diploma becomes officially worthless, a greater percentage of Oregon kids will have to get a college degree - at least a 2-year associates degree - to demonstrate some level of skill.  To get there, they'll have to take on student loans to pay the tuition.

So, bottom line, this is really nothing more than another sop to the liberals who control so-called higher education.

No, this is not the Bee. Oregon has decided that basic literacy and basic maths competency are not only unworthy goals of K-12 public education but that they shouldn’t even be a requirement to “earn” (really, at this point, just be granted) a high school diploma. Because ‘equity.’

‘Equity’ is, to my mind, among the most destructive, divisive, soul-crushing concepts in the ideological universe, the myriad and far-reaching consequences of this systemic cruelty will be felt for generations.

Apparently, Oregon governor Kate Brown has some inkling of the damage she is doing because she reportedly kept her stance on and even the eventual signing of this bill into law under the radar.

Oregon Live reports:

    For the next five years, an Oregon high school diploma will be no guarantee that the student who earned it can read, write or do math at a high school level.

    Gov. Kate Brown had demurred earlier this summer regarding whether she supported the plan passed by the Legislature to drop the requirement that students demonstrate they have achieved those essential skills. But on July 14, the governor signed Senate Bill 744 into law.

Truer than you said. A high school diploma from a public school has become almost worthless, plus or minus a few academic elite schools (which are in the activists' sights). Liberal Arts degrees, which used to mean the holder had a wide range of knowledge and a proven ability to learn are also nearing uselessness, except for a few private institutions.

Employers are probably going to rely more heavily on experienced workers and on recommendations from existing employees and other trusted sources. That bodes poorly for decent young people who lack those kinds of acquaintances.

Not all public high schools.  My daughter's school has its share of idiocies, but she's done a lot of hard work, some of it at college or near-college, level, and her diploma will be quite meaningful.  There are students from her high school who don't amount to much, but a diploma from her high school still indicates a material level of accomplishment.

Public school social promotions in the late 1960s and 1970s doomed the poor and minorities to generations of ignorance and poverty.  They are not only hurting the students, but also their communities, families, and society for generations to come.

Stupid beyond belief.  Limousine liberals are the real oppressors of the poor and minority for not establishing expectations of success for them to strive towards.
