A crewmember of the Navy’s fire-decimated USS Bonhomme Richard has been charged with starting the blaze under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, the service said Thursday.

The charges “were brought forth against a Navy Sailor in response to evidence found during the criminal investigation into the fire” that began July 12, 2020, while the amphibious assault ship was docked in San Diego, according to a statement by Cmdr. Sean Robertson, a spokesman for the Navy’s 3rd Fleet.

The statement did not identify the sailor, and Robertson did not respond to a emailed query by Stars and Stripes.

This article does not indicate whether the charge is for intention or negligence in starting the fire.

It is possible that a sailor wanted a postponement and decided to start a small fire that quickly got out of control.
Never underestimate how stupid a soldier can be. I have seen some really insane examples.

The United States Navy charged a sailor Thursday for starting a fire last year that destroyed the USS Bonhomme Richard while docked at Naval Base San Diego.

The sailor was a crewmember at the time and was charged with aggravated arson and the willful hazarding of a vessel, Cmdr. Sean Robertson, a U.S. 3rd Fleet spokesperson, said according to ABC News.

Robertson did not give any details as to what evidence was found or what the motive was. The name of the sailor has also not been disclosed.

Evidently the evidence found was more than that the guy was present in the area where the fire started.
