Russia strengthening ‘combat potential’ at Central Asian bases as Taliban advances in Afghanistan

Moscow — Russia is strengthening the “combat potential” of its bases in the former Soviet republics of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan as the situation in Afghanistan seems increasingly dire, said Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu during a trip to the Tajik capital, Dushanbe.

Shoigu was in the capital to discuss the situation in Afghanistan with colleagues from neighbouring states, including his Chinese counterpart, Wei Fenghe, in light of the ongoing withdrawal by US troops.

With its “hasty withdrawal,” the US has created an increasingly dangerous situation in the region, Shoigu said. The advance of the Islamist Taliban in the country is especially of concern for Russia.
