This isn't all that unusual, historically. Loads of equipment and war dogs were left behind in Vietnam. Planes that would have been surplus were pushed overboard from carriers when WW2 ended. It's a simple cost of return vs value of the equipment calculation. I'm not saying it was a right choice, just that it was not an unprecedented move by LIEden.
