Belgian woman contracted two coronavirus variants at same time: report

An elderly Belgian woman who passed away in March due to COVID-19 had apparently contracted two different variants of the virus at the same time.

Reuters reports the case of the elderly patient, who was unvaccinated, was discussed at the annual European Congress on Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases (ECCMID).

The woman, who was 90 when she died, had contracted both the alpha and beta variants of the virus, which were first detected in the U.K. and South Africa respectively. Her doctors reportedly said she could have contracted the variants from two different people.

The woman was treated at a hospital near Aalst, Belgium, according to Belgian media.

Reuters notes that Belgium's vaccination program had been stymied at the beginning of the year due to delivery issues that affected much of the European Union.

Reuters notes that Belgium's vaccination program had been stymied at the beginning of the year due to delivery issues that affected much of the European Union.

The "delivery issues" were the EU bureaucrats being very slow to approve any vaccine. Every EU country's bureaucracy had to put in their €0.02. The EU bureaucrats also delayed actually having purchase contracts by nickeling and diming the vaccine company, and thereby doing greater economic damage by delaying re-opening and people dying in a late March through mid May surge in deaths (see the Daily Deaths graph at https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/belgium/ ) who might not have (see the UK Daily Deaths graph, https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/uk/ ). The actual "delivery issues" were also caused by the inefficient EU bureaucracy.

I don't have info on UK vaccine distribution, beyond being the first country (outside of, possibly, China) to authorize use of a vaccine and their very aggressive early vaccinations rate, https://ourworldindata.org/covid-vaccinations . In the US, Trump had purchase contracts signed in August, 2020, had contracts in place for things like syringes and needles, and the US vaccinations rate can be seen at that previous link.
