Scientists fear that a highly contagious new COVID-19 variant that is ravaging Peru may be resistant to vaccines.

The Lambda mutation, or C.37, appears to have emerged in Peru last August — and is now being blamed for the country having the highest pandemic death rate in the world.

The concerning strain has since spread to around 30 countries, mostly in Latin America — but also as far as the UK, which has recorded at least eight cases, according to government figures.

There are no known cases of the Lambda strain in the US, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  .  .  .

Liberals have discovered a big, bad boogey man to scare people with. Worse than "WALKERS!" on the Walking Dead, worse than "GODZILLA!" in the movies, worse than "INCOMING!" in combat and certainly more scary than "FIRE!" in a crowded movie theater... libs will be screaming "COVID!" until everyone obeys them about when to work, when to open schools, when to eat out, when to shop and certainly until OBEDIENCE MASKS become second nature. By then we will question nothing they say, obeying instantly and completely without hesitation.

If I'm reading this right, this strain emerged... nine months ago??? That's an awfully long time for a single strain to rise to dominance without itself mutating.

A couple of months ago WHO decided to switch from geographic names to Greek alphabet names. Maybe "South Africa", "Brazil", and "India" sounded too racist to the over-sensitive. Or maybe it was getting clunky. :shrug: I have seen Greek alphabet names in other medical contexts, so it's not unprecedented.

The Greek alphabet names started with Alpha and have been used alphabetically. It'll get interesting if this goes past Omega. Anybody for "Alpha Beta variant"? Cue Alan Hamel!

Yeah, they did that for the same reason they were stumbling over themselves to avoid associating the original virus with Wuhan: they were afraid it might give those areas a stigma
