'The people want to see action': U.S. Rep. Nehls presses Army Corps of Engineers on flood mitigation

As sheriff of Fort Bend County, Troy Nehls led rescue efforts to save lives during Hurricane Harvey. As the U.S. representative for Congressional District 22, he’s pressing for flood mitigation action from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers.

On July 2, the freshman lawmaker questioned Lt. General Scott Spellmon of the USACE for an update on the status of projects for the Barker Reservoir, applying a sense of urgency to the actions that have not yet been undertaken.

“It's my job as a member of Congress to try to help those people, the people that have been flooded,” Nehls said. “I can assure you that the water in the streets has receded, but I'll guarantee that the flood waters are still in the minds of many of those that lost everything.”

The USACE set forth a plan in 1940 that was designed to protect the Houston area from flood devastation. The plan was repeatedly postponed and has only been revisited since Hurricane Harvey’s destruction.
