Problem Solvers caucus comes out in support for gas tax

The centrist House Problem Solvers Caucus on Friday came out in favor of an increased tax on gas to pay for infrastructure measures as an alternative to a corporate tax hike.

The 58-member caucus called to index gasoline and diesel taxes to a number of factors, including highway construction costs, inflation and fuel-economy standards, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The tax has remained at 18.4 cents a gallon for nearly three decades.

The caucus also suggested a possible vehicle-miles traveled tax (VMT), which proponents have noted would collect revenue from electric vehicle drivers as well.

The Biden administration has said an increase in gas tax would violate its pledge not to raise taxes on those making under $400,000. Republicans, however, have argued that due to the number of electric vehicles in circulation, an increase would mean numerous people using the highway system are not paying to use it.

Corporations pay taxes on profit.

The unwashed masses pay gas tax from after tax earnings to live - go to work, to grocery store, to doctor, to pharmacy, go to school, to daycare, to public transportation.  It's a regressive, inflationary surtax on those who pay too much in taxes already.
