The units these trainees will be assigned to if they complete the course are called "Special Operations Units" for very good reasons. They require skills and attitudes from their members that the regular army just doesn't have.
Unlike the regular army,Rangers and other Special Operations unit don't need a NCO "Baby sitter" to make sure they do their duty. If all the NCO's are killed or seriously wounded,a Ranger Spec-4 will jump up to take command, and he will do so not only because he has been trained to act and think on his own,but also because he WANTS to.
Duty in a Ranger Battalion tends to be a lot more dangerous than duty in the regular army,so EVERYBODY has to be trained, willing, and eager to assume command if necessary in order to complete the mission.
This means the training is more dangerous than is typical, and as a natural result of this, more trainees will get injured or killed than in regular army training commands.
I kid you not when I tell you that Ranger School is (or was before the creation of the PC Army) the most physically AND mentally demanding school in the US Military.
