Oregon’s Governor Put Teachers At The Front Of The Vaccine Line But Unions Are Still Unwilling To Return To Classrooms

When Oregon was prioritizing who would get the COVID-19 vaccine first, Gov. Kate Brown decided to put teachers at the top of the list, even before elderly people. Willamette Week reports that was a calculated risk: “Brown bet that the bad publicity she’d receive for delaying vaccines for seniors would be countered by the boost to children languishing at home.”

Maybe that risk will still pay off, but it’s starting to look as if teachers and their unions may thank the Governor by refusing to return to classrooms anyway. Sunday the Oregonian published an editorial arguing that, having committed to this risky approach, Gov. Brown needs to deliver.

Yesterday Willamette Week published an interview with Thiel who admits that teachers demanded the vaccine before returning to classrooms but now says that’s not good enough:

The unions' refusal, ultimately is not about Covid, except as a convenient tool. This is about power: over their members, through fear and reprisal threats; over the Dem pols the union owns.

Teacher's unions are really tone deaf. Even Democrats are expressing disgust over their refusal to work.

This is only because the Unions see a continued opportunity to continue getting payed for not working.  This sucks for the probationary level of teachers, because they have to rely on Unemployment.  I have two Nieces in CA in this category because they're fresh-outs from College.

IMO, the unions have picked a wrong hill to fight for. Their deploying their muscle and yanking on their pet D pols leashes. They may win the battle, but the damage they are doing to the reputations of teachers (as a profession) and PSs will be serious and long-lasting. By demonstrating the powerlessnes of so many Dem pols, the unions may also get some of them replaced with people promising to take on the union thugs. Paging Pyrrhus ...
