Trump has finally, formally conceded. It's time for his supporters, all of us, to move on

Contrary to what the media have said for five years, President Trump's legions of supporters are not dumb. They knew that his time in the White House was coming to an end. But they are angry.

The video message the president released Thursday evening should set them free of that anger.

Speaking from the White House, Trump called the rioting on Capitol Hill from the previous day a "heinous attack" and said directly to the wildly aggressive demonstrators that they "do not represent our country."

Just as importantly, Trump said that "a new administration will be inaugurated on Jan. 20" and that he would now focus on a "smooth, orderly and seamless transition of power."

It comes all too late, but at this point, after four people were left dead in Wednesday's riot, we take what we can get.

Much of Trump's message was also about how his wage to change the results of the 2020 election was about ensuring the integrity of it. He should be believed because there remain roughly 1 million open questions about what happened in that race and why.

But he did it the wrong way, and he let his supporters down in the process.

As he said in the message, though, "2020 has been a challenging time for our people." Nonetheless, he said, "This moment calls for healing."
