I woke up this morning listening to one of the local country stations playing a Tom T. Hall song and talking about the song a bit after it finished. "Oh, did he die?" I thought. Turns out that he did.  **nononono*
That's also how I found out this morning. I was listening to my usual silly-music show (Music to Go to the Dump By on WDEV out of Vermont) and heard "Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine." I wondered, "Why are they playing a serious song? Is this their usual dog music?" (They play at least one dog song every week.) Then I heard the backsell say that indeed, Hall died yesterday.

He'd been retired for a while, but it's still a loss.

The station that I was listening to has an  "oldies" show for five hours on Saturday mornings. When they play a lot of one artist, or a lot of songs written by the same person, it's usually a bad sign.

Tom T. Hall's last hit was "Little Bitty", which he wrote and which was a #1 country hit for Alan Jackson in 1996. The last place that I saw Tom T. Hall was in the Ken Burns documentary series "Country Music", where he was interviewed for some segments in the episodes focusing on the 60s & 70s, if I remember right.

One of my favorite Tom T. Hall songs:

Don Everly of early rock 'n' roll Everly Brothers dies at 84

Quote

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Don Everly, one-half of the pioneering Everly Brothers whose harmonizing country rock hits impacted a generation of rock ‘n’ roll music, has died. He was 84.

According to the Los Angeles Times, a family spokesperson said Everly died at his home in Nashville, Tennessee, on Saturday. His brother, Phil Everly, died in January 2014 at age 74.

In the late 1950s and 1960s, the duo of Don and Phil drew upon their rural roots with their strummed guitars and high, yearning harmonies, while their poignant songs — many by the team of Felice and Boudleaux Bryant — embodied teenage restlessness and energy. Their 19 top 40 hits included “Bye Bye Love,” “Let It Be Me,” “All I Have to Do Is Dream” and “Wake Up Little Susie,” and performers from the Beatles to Simon & Garfunkel cited them as key influences.

Georgette passed away a couple years ago. So yeah, it's down to John Amos and Betty White, the latter of whom will probably be around until the next mass extinction event.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Not to worry. She is too old for that. The world is safe.

Ya gotta admit they would be a fun couple, though.
