Smith: J.J. Watt spoke the truth. When will Cal McNair start listening?

J.J. Watt said everything you have been thinking, feeling and cursing for years.

It was the ultimate job-quitting exit interview — with one sad game still left to play during one of the most pathetic seasons in Texans history.

“We stink,” a steaming Watt said Sunday, after a bad Cincinnati team beat the even worse Texans 37-31 inside NRG Stadium.

“When you’re trash,” he said.

“That’s who I feel the most bad for, is our fans,” said Watt, driving the truth home with a sledgehammer. “The people who care so deeply, and the city and the people who love it, and who truly want it to be great.”

Is CEO Cal McNair even listening?

Is team president Jamey Rootes, who has long preferred his daily serving of Texans to always be cooked sunny side up, able to process unfiltered criticism?

Will the ownership family that helped bring the NFL back to Houston finally realize that paying fans, well-paid players and highly frustrated staff members are fed up with the junk the Texans have mostly been serving to the local masses since 2002?

The same message could be delivered about the Dallas Cowboys.

Jerry Jones is pro football's version of Frank Lucas: he's got his fans hooked on Blue Magic.
You can avoid reality, but you cannot avoid the consequences of avoiding reality.
