FDA clears nation's first COVID-19 vaccine

The country's first coronavirus shots are one step closer to getting injected into the general public after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted emergency authorization late Friday to the vaccine manufactured by Pfizer and BioNTech.

The announcement comes as the country is reeling from a new surge of COVID-19 infections, with deaths now exceeding 3,000 people each day.

Now that the FDA has given the vaccine the green light, the federal government is able to start distributing it to states. However, vaccinations won't begin until after a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention committee recommends the vaccine and the CDC accepts that recommendation.

The CDC panel is expected to meet soon to vote on whether to recommend the vaccine and for which groups.

For example, the vaccine has not been studied in children younger than 16 years old, or women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

The terms of the FDA's EUA exclude children under age 16, https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-takes-key-action-fight-against-covid-19-issuing-emergency-use-authorization-first-covid-19 . However Moderna began a Phase 2 study of their vaccine on December 10th with youths ages 12-17, https://investors.modernatx.com/news-releases/news-release-details/moderna-announces-first-participants-dosed-phase-23-study-covid . So while The Hill's statement is literally true - the Pfizer vaccine was not tested on under-16YOs ( https://www.pfizer.com/news/press-release/press-release-detail/pfizer-and-biontech-choose-lead-mrna-vaccine-candidate-0 ) - it omits a significant fact that complicates its claim.

People working in the White House should receive the vaccine somewhat later in the program, unless specifically necessary. I have asked that this adjustment be made. I am not scheduled to take the vaccine, but look forward to doing so at the appropriate time. Thank you!
