YouTube suspends and demonetizes OANN over fake COVID-19 cure video

YouTube temporarily suspended One America News Network's account for violating its COVID-19 rules.

The platform announced that OANN has been suspended for a week and that YouTube demonetized the network's account — its ability to make money off content — on Tuesday, Axios first reported. A YouTube spokeswoman, Ivy Choi, confirmed it to the Washington Examiner.

Choi said in a statement, "Early on in this pandemic, we’ve worked to prevent the spread of harmful misinformation associated with COVID-19 on YouTube. After careful review, we removed a video from OANN and issued a strike on the channel for violating our COVID-19 misinformation policy, which prohibits content claiming there’s a guaranteed cure."

YouTube has a three-strike policy for users, and each account is granted one warning before strikes begin to be issued. The policy states that once one strike is issued, full privileges will be suspended for a week, which matches the ban on OANN. It would face additional consequences for more strikes.

Choi also said that OANN was demonetized as a result of its repeated violations of the coronavirus misinformation policy.

"Additionally, due to repeated violations of our COVID-19 misinformation policy and other channel monetization policies, we've suspended the channel from the YouTube Partner Program and as a result, its monetization on YouTube," she added.

Founder and President Charles Herring of OANN did not immediately return a request for comment from the Washington Examiner.

YouTube has barred One America News Network from posting new videos for a week and stripped it of its ability to make money off existing content after the Trump-friendly channel uploaded a video promoting a phony cure for COVID-19, YouTube spokesperson Ivy Choi tells Axios.

Why it matters: YouTube has been criticized for allowing OANN to spread misinformation using its platform, particularly around coronavirus and the election. This marks the Google-owned service’s first crackdown against OANN.

Details: OANN’s one-week suspension from posting new videos or livestreams is the result of a “strike” YouTube issued for violating its COVID-19 misinformation policy, which prohibits saying there is a guaranteed cure to the virus. YouTube took down the video that triggered the strike.

•   OANN is also suspended from the YouTube Partner Program, which means if it wants to monetize its videos again, it will have to re-apply.

•   YouTube has a three-strikes policy before an account is terminated. This is OANN’s first strike, but it has violated the platform’s COVID-19 misinformation policy before, meaning it gets no more warnings if it breaks the rules again — just additional strikes.

•   YouTube says it does not consider OANN an authoritative news source.

It is NOT wrong covid information.   Totally backwards.  It is correct, is why it was removed.  GLOBALIST MEDIA IS LYING.

Funny.  It is said, even mouthwash with alcohol will help kill covid,  'cold' germs.  Lol. I just, take some crown royal, put in some agave and sip, if I have a sore throat.  Honey will work too.  I am sure it was some TRUTH...nothing phony.
