Texas Senator Ted Cruz is facing criticism after a tweet, that some call insensitive as the COVID-19 crisis hits El Paso harder than any other area.
Cruz tweeted a meme, “Come and take it,†with a photo of a turkey.
This is a well-known saying in the Lonestar state, a symbol of Texas independence. The slogan is usually tied to a photo of a gun, but was replaced with a turkey—showing relevance to the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday.

“We don’t want anyone to encourage something that we haven’t fared well with,†El Paso County Judge Ricardo Samaniego said. “And we haven’t done well with the holidays.â€
Samaniego and other El Paso leaders have plead with El Pasoans not to have large family gatherings—especially during holidays.
