Attorneys from the Alliance Defending Freedom go to court today in San Francisco representing three California churches seeking exemption from a Golden State rule mandating they pay for abortions.“The government shouldn’t be forcing churches to pay for abortion,†said ADF Senior Counsel Jeremiah Galus, who will argue the case before the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.“We are asking the 9th Circuit to invalidate this unconstitutional mandate because California officials are required to follow the law and legal precedent, not the dictates of groups that have an axe to grind against religious organizations that don’t share their views on abortion,†Galus said.Galus was referring to email traffic in 2014 between officials with the California Department of Managed Care and Planned Parenthood in which the latter pressured the state government to change an existing rule that exempted churches from having to include abortion coverage in health insurance for employees.The case originated in a suit filed by the Foothill Church in Glendora, Calvary Chapel Chino Hills in Chino, and The Shepherd of the Hills Church in Porter Ranch. The three congregations are challenging the department’s mandate on appeal in Foothill Church v. Rouillard.
