Proposition 22 asked voters whether Uber, Lyft, and other app-based drivers should remain independent contractors or be eligible for the benefits that come with being company employees.
This article is badly written, omitting or obscuring relevant facts.
First, the "labor law" Prop 16 overturned was AB-5, which became effective at the beginning of 2020. IOW, Prop 16 reverts to the labor law definition of a contractor that had been in effect prior to 2020.
Second, AB-5 was a corrupt assault by labor unions, taxi medallion owners and cities that sell taxi medallions on Uber and Lyft.
Third, while Uber and Lyft were the targets of AB-5, it also affected DoorDash which has a similar model, except they pick up and deliver take-out food, and a vast array of events such as music festivals, which use contract people for the logistics of the events and in the case of many music festivals, for some of the "band" backing the headliner artists.
Fourth, not only did the companies, e.g. Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash, support Prop 16, so also did a majority of their drivers.
IMO, this was a big win against union-government mutual back-slapping.
