Cruz: GOP could face 'bloodbath of Watergate proportions' on Election Day

Jonathan Easley  1 hr ago

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Friday warned Republicans the party could face a "bloodbath" in November if voters aren't feeling optimistic about the economy and the direction of the pandemic.

Speaking on CNBC's "Squawk Box," Cruz said the presidential election is extremely "volatile" and that President Trump could still get reelected by a "big margin" if voters feel like the U.S. is recovering from the pandemic-induced economic shutdown.

But he warned the party could also face landslide losses similar to what happened in 1976, when Jimmy Carter won the White House in the first election following the Watergate scandal and Richard Nixon's resignation.

"I am worried. It's volatile, it's highly volatile ... if people are going back to work, if they're optimistic, if they're positive about the future, we could see a fantastic election - the president getting reelected with a big margin, Republicans winning both Houses of Congress and I think that's a real possibility," Cruz said.

No government in the 12,000 years of modern mankind history has led its people into anything but the history books with a simple lesson, don't let this happen to you.

GOTV will be critical.  Also will be conservatives who happen to stay home or vote 3rd party based on principles.

And yes I was in that category in 2016.
I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.

I too, was in that category in 2016 (Voted Constitution Party) @catfish1957 2020 is way different, particularly since I got over most of my butthurt.
I will more than likely be voting Trump/Pence next month.

Exactly same here.  Was huge Cruz supporter who just couldn't get over the '16 primary spat.  Crawling throug glass this time to vote for Trump.  Not because I like him, but realize what dim socialism will do to our country.  Never in my long life has there been a more important election

It will be important to keep the dem senate majority as narrow as possible.  The red state dems are unlikely to go along with radical changes.

IMHO, the GOP Primary 2016 was 'do or die'.  We just didn't measure up, some were blinded by sparkling glass or some such. Now we find ourselves in another dire situation just 4 years later.

I don't think the Democrats take the Senate.
