2nd Trump-Biden debate to be virtual due to Trump's COVID-19

WASHINGTON (AP) — The second presidential debate between President Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden will take place virtually amid the fallout from the president's diagnosis of COVID-19.

The nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates debates made the announcement Thursday morning, a week before the two were scheduled to face off in Miami, “in order to protect the health and safety of all involved with the second presidential debate."

The candidates will “participate from separate remote locations,” while the participants and moderator remain in Miami, the commission said.

US election 2020: Donald Trump refuses virtual debate with Joe Biden to throw plans into disarray

A "virtual" event means Joe can huddle in his basement or other bunker with his teleprompter, notes, earpiece and never have to speak for himself. And what's with the "participants" and moderator in Miami. What participants? The only participants are supposed to be the two candidates and the moderator.

This doesn't look good for Trump from the POV of the typical "non-political voter".

I am HOPING, this is just more of his strategy. Say he's not going to participate to get this in the news with EVERYBODY talking about it,and then say "I will participate if I can have a team in the same room as Biden,and he is free to have a team on the room with me. That way there can be no cheating."

How could Team Biden refuse that,especially after the days of posing and making statements about how "Joe is ready,why isn't Trump"?

UPDATE II: Instead of debating, the Trump campaign announced they will hold a rally instead.

Bill Stepien, Trump’s campaign manager, said Trump “will have posted multiple negative tests prior to the debate" so there is no reason to hold it virtually.

President Trump should (1) insist on the debate taking place live and in person for reasons that should be obvious, and (2) declare that,  due to lingering concerns about his recent Covid diagnosis,  Vice President Pence will debate Joe Biden in his place.
