Had some computer issues which are resolved so now I return to the Coasters. They were to become known as the Clown Princes of R&R because of songs like "Along Came Jones" and "Yakety Yak" but early in their careers they sang at least one popular song which was performed by a number of artist  including Xavier Cugat and Johnny Mathis. However, I very much enjoyed the Coaster version. Can you say "Do wop"?

My final entry for The Coasters, only they weren't The Coasters when this was recorded. This song is credited to The Robins members of which went on to form the core of the early Coasters. In addition, this was written by the prolific and highly successful team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller who wrote a host of early R&R hits. They were so successful, in fact, a musical revue of their work opened in 1995 and it went on to win a number of Tony awards. The revue was entitled, appropriately, "Smokey Joe's Café".

Yet another Leiber and Stoller song performed by a man for whom they wrote several hits, Elvis Presley. This was one of Elvis's early RCA recordings (1957) and is, imo, one of his 2 best ballads (the other being "I can't help falling in love with you"). In addition the song showcases the excellent backup vocals of the Jordanaires who gave Elvis's earliest works such a smooth sound.

IMO, the track and field shots don't belong in the video.

From his bio on WIKI   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israel_Kamakawiwo%CA%BBole

Throughout his life, Kamakawiwoʻole suffered from severe obesity and at one point weighed 757 pounds (343 kg; 54.1 st) standing 6-foot-2-inch (1.88 m) tall.[9] He endured several hospitalizations because of health problems caused by his obesity.[9] Beset with respiratory, heart and other medical problems, he died at the age of 38 in Queen's Medical Center at 12:18 a.m. on June 26, 1997.[9] Kamakawiwoʻole is survived by his widow, Marlene Kamakawiwoʻole, and their daughter, Ceslie-Ann "Wehi".[10]

The Hawaii state flag flew at half-staff on July 10, 1997, the day of Kamakawiwoʻole's funeral. His koa wood coffin lay in state at the state capitol building in Honolulu. He was the third person in Hawaiian history to be awarded this honor, and the only one who was not a government official. Approximately ten thousand people attended the funeral. Thousands of fans gathered as his ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean at Mākua Beach on July 12, 1997.[10] The funeral and the scattering of Kamakawiwoʻole's ashes were featured in the official music videos of "Over the Rainbow" released posthumously by Mountain Apple Company; as of January 2013, the videos as featured on YouTube have garnered over 100,000,000 views.[11][12]

On September 20, 2003, hundreds paid tribute to Kamakawiwoʻole as a bronze bust of the revered singer was unveiled at the Waianae Neighborhood Community Center on Oʻahu. The singer's widow, Marlene Kamakawiwoʻole, and sculptor Jan-Michelle Sawyer were present for the dedication ceremony.[13]

Sticking with Elvis.

After Sam Phillips sold Elvis's contract to RCA the first major recording he did was "Heartbreak Hotel". As teenagers we listened to that a lot and then one day someone suggested we turn that record over and listen to what was called the "B" side. I wound up liking this song even more than "Heartbreak Hotel".

I am adding a second video of this song because this is of poorer quality but it's a rare live performance of Elvis in Tupelo, MS, in September, 1956. It partially captures the mystique of the early Elvis and the fan reaction to him (even Elvis seems amused by it).

Sorry if this seems random, but I had a cousin remind me of this old ditty I performed in elementary school.

Above from the movie "Going My Way" (1944) an enjoyable film in its own right but also an interesting look at how Hollywood treated Christians, in this case Catholics, not so long ago.

Adding now a song of historical importance, important for 2 reasons: (1) It  has been credited as the first hit by a rock and roll group. Not the first R&R song but the first to go gold and be sung on a popular TV show of the time called "Your Hit Parade" which showcased popular music. (2) It was the first R&R song yours truly (me) ever heard. I must have been 10 or 11 years old when the 2 brothers who lived next door to me introduced me and my brother to this work. At that time songs like this were referred to as rhythm and blues due to its origins in the black community but today it is called early R&R or "doo wop".

What is amazing is when you read the comments on youtube there is more and more young kids commenting on the music from the 50's, 60's and 70's and 70's and lamenting they don't have anything like this to listen to today....

BTW I have over 2000 songs on my itunes and none of it is hip-hop or rap ~LOL~

There is hope for the generation
