U.S. Special Forces Get An Upgrade To Unique Secret-Shrouded Weapons

Secretive precision weapons used to target insurgent leaders just received a significant upgrade for ‘enhanced surgical strikes’ in the most challenging conditions – bad weather, urban environments and when GPS is jammed. Details are classified, but open-source documents give intriguing hints about what the new capability can do.

The upgrade appears in a contract blandly titled Datalink Radio, awarded to Raytheon in May. The contract covers up to $92 million in communications gear known as Situational Awareness Data Link (SADL). Raytheon was unable to discuss the contract, under which they will supply 1,600 of the special radio sets a year, to be retro-fitted to a range of weapons known as Stand-Off Precision Guided Munitions (SOPGM). Deliveries will start within 12 months.
