Teachers' Unions Falling Out of Favor With Americans. Is It Any Wonder?
By Stacey Lennox Aug 17, 2020 2:47 PM EST

The debate over schools reopening has affected how Americans view teachers’ unions. It has been well-publicized that the unions in many districts have submitted political demands that have little to do with pandemic safety as a condition of returning to the classroom.

None of the political demands have anything to do with educating children, either. One of the requirements, defunding the police, has actually been getting children killed in cities like New York City, Chicago, and Atlanta. Perhaps the most annoying displays were members of the teachers’ unions protesting school openings in large groups while maintaining that returning to the classroom is too dangerous.

Of course, these protests were done side by side with groups like the Democratic Socialists of America and the Center for Popular Democracy. Hyperbole was on full display, especially considering that over 20 other industrialized countries have opened schools with no significant COVID-19 outbreaks. The coffins were a nice touch, especially for a virus that has a 99.8% recovery rate and where fatalities are most common above the age of 70. Nationally the average age of school teachers is about 40.

I bet the rank and file are pissed.  Unions effort's right now ought to be 100% insuring classroom safety for the elderly/pre-existers on staff.

I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.

Teachers are the blacksmiths of yesteryear.  In 30 years, classroom education with a human teacher will be a thing of history.  We will have monitors getting paid minimum wage, and all teaching will be done via Internet, robot, or a fully interactive hologram.

Structured education is a modernist fad.
The Ancients were self-educated; Socrates mentoring Plato who mentored Aristotle.
As late as the 18th century, Mozart and Hayden shared their wisdom of Music, while
the latter tutored Beethoven.
All were geniuses who never spent a day being herded into classrooms.
But we are the greatest, cuz we have all those diplomas and degrees, doncha know!!!!

Sometimes I wonder, what it was like for the countrymen of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle?  Did they ever educate themselves?  Were they literate?

Cyber, I'll  assume you're serious.
The "teacher" for the Ancients was their experience throughout life (history).

@ Cyber.
Permit this reflection about the Ancients.
They grasped both their mortality and the shortness of their life span.
As such, they self imposed pressure to learn from error and achieve.
Consequently, they tended to be serious and not frivolous which is
reflected in the Art they created particularly in Architecture and Literature.
